The Very Beginning
William P. Stein establishes a one-man accounting practice in New Albany, IN laying the foundation for what would become Monroe Shine.
JANUARY
1937
Louisville CPA firm Brown & Imhof acquires Steinâs practice.
JANUARY
1939

Grover C. Greweling and V. G. Monroe start Greweling and Monroe CPA firm but were quickly sent a court injunction by their previous employer and prohibited from providing accounting services to their clients for 2 years. Mr. Monroe withdrew from the partnership the morning of April 10, 1939.

APRIL
1939

By the afternoon of April 10, 1939 V. G. Monroe interviewed with Brown & Imhof and accepted the job of managing the firm’s New Albany office located on the 5th floor of the Elsby Building. This was the beginning of what was to become Monroe Shine & Co., Inc.

V. G. Monroe passes the CPA exam.

V. G. Monroe is admitted as Shareholder of Brown & Imhof.
1944

J. Robert Shine hired as an intern accountant at Brown & Imhof while still in college.

1945
J. Robert Shine graduates from college and becomes a permanent employee of Brown & Imhof.
1950

J. R. Shine admitted as a Shareholder of Brown & Imhof and Brown & Imhof becomes Brown & Monroe.

1955

Brown & Monroe charged $25 to do a tax return.

1963

V. G. Monroe and J. R. Shine separated from the Louisville firm and established their own practice, Monroe Shine.

Monroe Shine becomes Monroe Shine & Conn on July 1, 1963.

1967

Monroe Shine constructs a two-level building at the corner of Third and East Market streets in New Albany, IN which was completed in November 1967.

Bob Shine appointed President and CEO.

1968

Monroe Shine opens an office in Bedford, IN with Ray Housel as Manager. The office had one calculator.

1972

Monroe Shine & Co. established.

1976

Don Williams and Ray Housel admitted as Shareholders.

SEPTEMBER
1977

Monroe Shine becomes one of the first CPA firms in the nation to elect to undergo a Quality Control Compliance review conducted by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

DECEMBER
1977

The first âState of the Firmâ established outlining five year goals, with the first item on the list being to acquire an in-house computer.

1978

A new Louisville office in the Plainview area was established with Mike Larkin and Kenneth W. Coyle splitting their time between the New Albany and Louisville offices.

1st Monroe Shine Firm Family Picnic at Huberâs.

1st Monroe Shine Management Retreat with agenda items including the âFirm Conceptâ and electronic data processing.

First issue of the Monroe Shine âNEWSLEDGERâ is issued to clients and employees.

Charlie McMonigle admitted as Shareholder.

Monroe Shine establishes annual scholarships to accounting students at IU, IUS, Bellarmine and UL.

Kenneth Coyle admitted as Shareholder.

The ïĴrm installed a computer with word processing capability. This served many internal needs of the firm and also helped to better serve our clients.

Sara Teegarden, Lisa Klein & Debbie Rush drove the Monroe Shine & Co., Inc. TAX-BUSTERS race car in the third annual New Albany Grand Prix as part of the Harvest Homecoming celebration.
