  1. JULY

    1925

    The Very Beginning

    William P. Stein establishes a one-man accounting practice in New Albany, IN laying the foundation for what would become Monroe Shine.

  2. JANUARY

    1937

    Louisville CPA firm Brown & Imhof acquires Stein’s practice.

  3. JANUARY

    1939

    Grover C. Greweling and V. G. Monroe start Greweling and Monroe CPA firm but were quickly sent a court injunction by their previous employer and prohibited from providing accounting services to their clients for 2 years. Mr. Monroe withdrew from the partnership the morning of April 10, 1939.

    By the afternoon of April 10, 1939 V. G. Monroe interviewed with Brown & Imhof and accepted the job of managing the firm’s New Albany office located on the 5th floor of the Elsby Building. This was the beginning of what was to become Monroe Shine & Co., Inc.

  5. NOVEMBER

    1939

    V. G. Monroe passes the CPA exam.

  6. JULY

    1940

    V. G. Monroe is admitted as Shareholder of Brown & Imhof.

  7. 1944

    J. Robert Shine hired as an intern accountant at Brown & Imhof while still in college.

  8. 1945

    J. Robert Shine graduates from college and becomes a permanent employee of Brown & Imhof.

  9. 1950

    J. R. Shine admitted as a Shareholder of Brown & Imhof and Brown & Imhof becomes Brown & Monroe.

  10. 1955

    Brown & Monroe charged $25 to do a tax return.

  11. JULY

    1963

    V. G. Monroe and J. R. Shine separated from the Louisville firm and established their own practice, Monroe Shine.

  12. JULY

    1963

    Monroe Shine becomes Monroe Shine & Conn on July 1, 1963.

  13. JULY

    1967

    Monroe Shine constructs a two-level building at the corner of Third and East Market streets in New Albany, IN which was completed in November 1967.

  14. 1967

    Bob Shine appointed President and CEO.

  15. 1968

    Monroe Shine opens an office in Bedford, IN with Ray Housel as Manager. The office had one calculator.

  16. 1972

    Monroe Shine & Co. established.

  17. 1976

    Don Williams and Ray Housel admitted as Shareholders.

  18. SEPTEMBER

    1977

    Monroe Shine becomes one of the first CPA firms in the nation to elect to undergo a Quality Control Compliance review conducted by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

  19. DECEMBER

    1977

    The first “State of the Firm” established outlining five year goals, with the first item on the list being to acquire an in-house computer.

  20. 1978

    A new Louisville office in the Plainview area was established with Mike Larkin and Kenneth W. Coyle splitting their time between the New Albany and Louisville offices.

    1st Monroe Shine Firm Family Picnic at Huber’s.

  22. 1978

    Monroe Shine (MS) logo.

  23. 1978

    1st Monroe Shine Management Retreat with agenda items including the “Firm Concept” and electronic data processing.

  24. JUNE

    1979

    First issue of the Monroe Shine “NEWSLEDGER” is issued to clients and employees.

  25. 1979

    Charlie McMonigle admitted as Shareholder.

  26. 1979

    Monroe Shine establishes annual scholarships to accounting students at IU, IUS, Bellarmine and UL.

  27. 1980

    Kenneth Coyle admitted as Shareholder.

  29. OCTOBER

    1981

    The ïĴrm installed a computer with word processing capability. This served many internal needs of the firm and also helped to better serve our clients.

  30. 1981

    Dale Gettelfinger admitted as Shareholder.

  32. SEPTEMBER

    1984

    V. G. Monroe passed away.

  33. 1984

    Steve Goble admitted as Shareholder.

  34. JULY

    1985

    Monroe Shine celebrates 60th Anniversary.

    W. Michael Larkin admitted as Shareholder.

  36. 1986

    Monroe Shine & Co., Inc. logo.

  37. AUGUST

    1987

    Monroe Shine opens office in Henderson, KY with Dan Tingle as the Manager (sold in 1993).

  38. 1988

    Monroe Shine was active in assisting clients in selecting, installing and using computers for general bookkeeping and specialized applications.

  39. 1988

    Brad Parrott admitted as Manager of Henderson office. (1988 – 1993)

  40. 1989

    W. Michael Larkin appointed President and CEO.

  41. OCTOBER

    1990

    Roger Harbeson, Jim Gish and Joe Boesing admitted as Shareholders.

    Monroe Shine & Co., Inc. blue logo.

  43. AUGUST

    1994

    Monroe Shine purchases Howard & Co.

  44. 1995

    Sara Teegarden, Lisa Klein & Debbie Rush drove the Monroe Shine & Co., Inc. TAX-BUSTERS race car in the third annual New Albany Grand Prix as part of the Harvest Homecoming celebration.

    Monroe Shine starburst logo.

    Butch Shaw, Deborah Rush, Julia (Spurrier) Meredith, Michael Carroll, Kyle Patton and Greg Stokes admitted as Shareholders, and JoEtta Warren appointed Principal.

    1999

    Monroe Shine expanded its New Albany office to provide additional space for a growing number of employees.

    Dale Gettelfinger appointed President and CEO.

    2000

    Monroe Shine founded Horizon Wealth Management and Infinite Solutions, LLC.

    Monroe Shine celebrates 80th Anniversary.

    W. Michael Larkin passed away.

    Louisville office moves to the American Founders Bank building on North Hurstbourne Parkway to accommodate more employees.

    Phillip Beaman, Greg Cockerel and Jeremy Finn admitted as Shareholders.

    Roger Harbeson, appointed President and CEO.
